Aims

4 Areas of Engagement

Research

At the cutting edge of international research

MILYON supports the research activities of its five laboratories on a broad spectrum of mathematics, computer science and theoretical physics, and facilitates synergies between these disciplines.

The main research topics include:
  • fundamental and applied mathematics
  • fundamental computer science, high performance computing, mathematical structures of proofs, computations, logic
  • discrete mathematics at the interface of computer science
  • machine learning and data science
  • mathematical physics, statistical physics, signal processing, hydrodynamic turbulence
  • applications of mathematics to medicine, biology and other interfaces of mathematics and fundamental computer science

Education

To providing high-level higher education

MILYON works closely with several bachelor's and master's courses in Lyon - Saint-Étienne. These MILYON-supported courses lead mainly to academic and industrial research.

Through various initiatives (scholarships, internships, etc.) encourages the mobility of the best French and foreign students. Labex develops partnerships with international universities (Vietnam, Chile, Canada, Romania, Brazil, etc.).

By encouraging student mobility and strengthening student employability, MILYON represents an opportunity for companies wishing to recruit.

Knowledge dissemination

A link between researchers and society

One of MILYON’s distinctive assets is its public engagement. MILYON is a forerunner in the dissemination of mathematical and computer science culture among the general public. It helps responding to major societal issues by modernizing these disciplines and thereby making science education and careers more meaningful and attractive for young people.

One of the best examples is the establishment of the House of Mathematics and Computer Science (MMI). This unique concept in France is not only dedicated to the dissemination of scientific knowledge, but also acts as a dynamic local force.

Valorization

Boosting competitiveness through mathematics and computer science

MILYON intends to contribute to the society and economy of tomorrow, in particular through the enhancement of research and the transfer of knowledge to industry.
Labex helps finance theses, scenes and research contracts in companies. It can put the skills of its researchers at the service of companies on specific issues. It funds events that allow the meeting and exchanges between academic research and industry actors in one but: to advance knowledge.
